Study Bachelor in China 2026: Admission, CSCA and CSC Scholarship
To study a bachelor in China in 2026–27 you need a school diploma, language proof and, at many universities, a CSCA score. Here is the full application path.

To study a bachelor in China in 2026–27, you need a high school diploma, a valid passport, proof of language ability for your program and, at a growing number of universities, a CSCA score report. Most programs start in September. Mathematics is the CSCA subject every applicant takes, and scholarship deadlines usually fall early in the year.
- Intake: most bachelor programs start in September.
- Length: usually four years. Medicine (MBBS) programs are longer, commonly five years plus an internship year.
- Teaching language: Chinese-taught programs are the majority; English-taught options exist in medicine, engineering, business and other fields.
- CSCA: mandatory for Chinese Government Scholarship bachelor applicants and participating universities for 2026–27 entry, and the official rollout plan expects it to cover all international undergraduate applicants by 2028.
- Typical tuition: about 18,000 to 30,000 CNY a year at many public universities for standard programs, with English-taught, partnership and medical programs often higher.
- Scholarships: Chinese Government (CSC), provincial, city and university scholarships.
Why study a bachelor in China in 2026?
For many students from South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa and Central Asia, China offers a strong mix: research universities with modern labs, tuition that is often well below the UK, US or Australia, and real scholarship options. Engineering, computer science, medicine and business are popular choices, and many cities are safe and well connected by high-speed rail. If you are weighing other destinations, read our comparison of study in China vs UK vs Australia.
It is also fair to name the challenges. Daily life outside campus mostly happens in Chinese, even if your classes are in English. You will rely on local apps for payment and messaging, the climate varies a lot between north and south, and admission rules are changing quickly with the arrival of CSCA. Students who learn some Chinese early and plan their documents ahead usually settle in fastest.
What are the entry requirements for international undergraduates?
Requirements differ by university, but most international undergraduate admission guides ask for the same core documents. Use this list as a checklist and then confirm every item on your target university's admission page:
- Citizenship: a valid non-Chinese passport. Universities have extra rules for applicants who were once Chinese citizens.
- Age: usually at least 18 at enrollment. The Chinese Government Scholarship has set an upper limit of under 25 for bachelor applicants in recent years.
- Education: a high school diploma (or expected graduation) and full transcripts, often notarized or certified.
- Language for Chinese-taught programs: an HSK certificate, often HSK 4 or higher, plus CSCA Professional Chinese where required.
- Language for English-taught programs: IELTS, TOEFL or similar, or proof that your schooling was in English, depending on the university.
- CSCA score report: where the university or scholarship requires it, with the subjects your major needs.
- Health: a Foreigner Physical Examination Form is commonly required, at application or before the visa.
- Other: a personal statement, recommendation letters for scholarship applications, and sometimes a police clearance certificate.
Where does CSCA fit in your application?
The CSCA is not a separate admission round. It is one of the documents your university reviews alongside your transcripts, language results and personal statement. You take it before you apply, then upload the score report with your application. Official notices for the 2026–27 cycle state that the CSCA score report is one of the necessary materials for admission review. Our guide to the CSCA exam explains the subjects and scoring in detail.
- All programs: Mathematics, 48 questions in 60 minutes, in English or Chinese.
- Science, engineering, agriculture and medicine: Mathematics plus at least one of Physics or Chemistry.
- Chinese-taught programs: add Professional Chinese, 80 questions in 90 minutes, Humanities or STEM track.
- English-taught programs: exempt from Professional Chinese, but not from Mathematics or the science subjects.
The key planning rule is to work backwards from your earliest deadline. Results come out typically within 7–14 working days depending on test mode; check your session notice. For the September 2026 intake, university notices pointed applicants to the sessions between December 2025 and April 2026, with the earlier ones safer for scholarship deadlines. Expect a similar pattern for September 2027: the official notice lists regular sessions, and the reported 2026–27 calendar adds a November sitting. Our CSCA exam 2026–27 guide lists the reported dates; confirm them on csca.cn.
Study bachelor in China 2026: a typical application timeline
Exact dates change each year and differ by country and university, so treat this as a typical pattern for a September 2027 start, not a fixed schedule. University deadlines are often earlier than embassy deadlines, so put every date into one calendar as soon as it is announced.
Typical timeline for a September 2027 start
October to November 2026: shortlist and plan
Choose 5 to 10 universities and majors, note the teaching language, and find each program's CSCA subjects. Register for a CSCA session on csca.cn.
November 2026 to January 2027: sit the CSCA
These sessions leave the most time before scholarship deadlines. Prepare documents in parallel: transcripts, passport, physical exam form and language certificates.
December 2026 to April 2027: apply
Submit university applications and scholarship applications. CSC Type A goes through the Chinese embassy in your country; Type B goes directly to the university. Deadlines vary widely.
March to April 2027: later CSCA sessions
Useful if a university has a later deadline or you want to improve a score. Check that results arrive before the deadline.
May to August 2027: offers and visa
Universities send admission letters and the JW201 or JW202 form. Apply for an X1 student visa at the Chinese embassy or visa center.
September 2027: arrive and register
Register at your university, buy the required student insurance, complete the local physical exam if needed, and apply for your residence permit within 30 days of entry.
How does the CSC scholarship work for bachelor students?
The Chinese Government Scholarship, managed by the China Scholarship Council (CSC), is the best-known funding option. A full scholarship has covered tuition, a dormitory place or an accommodation subsidy, comprehensive medical insurance and a monthly stipend. Published CSC figures put the bachelor stipend at 2,500 CNY a month and the off-campus accommodation subsidy at 700 CNY a month. Check the current notice, as amounts can change. To see which universities offer which scholarships, compare Chinese universities and scholarships on WiseAdmit, the company behind CSCA.ai.
There are two main routes. Type A applications go through the Chinese embassy or the education ministry in your home country. Type B applications go directly to a Chinese university that has scholarship places, sometimes under named programs such as the Silk Road program. For 2026–27, all CSC bachelor applicants must sit the CSCA before their deadline, so start your CSCA Mathematics preparation early. Places are limited and competitive, so also apply for provincial, city and university scholarships, and keep a self-funded plan as a backup.
How much does a bachelor's degree in China cost?
Tuition depends on the university, the field and the teaching language. China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), for example, lists bachelor tuition of 18,000 CNY a year for arts and 22,000 CNY for science, and Tsinghua lists 30,000 CNY a year for its Chinese-English taught science and engineering programs. English-taught, joint-campus and medical programs often cost more. Add living costs, insurance of about 800 CNY a year, and one-time costs such as application fees and the CSCA fee. For a month-by-month breakdown, see our guide to the cost of living in China for students.
Should you choose an English-taught or Chinese-taught program?
English-taught programs let you start right away and skip the Professional Chinese test, but there are fewer of them, they can cost more, and some are popular and competitive. Chinese-taught programs offer far more choice and may cost less, but you need strong Chinese, usually HSK 4 or above, and the CSCA Professional Chinese test. Many students take a one-year Chinese language program first, then enter a Chinese-taught degree.
Whichever you choose, your CSCA Mathematics score will be part of the picture. If you want structured help before your CSCA session, our live online CSCA classes are taught by teachers who know the syllabus, with recordings for students in different time zones.
