CSCA Preparation: How to Prepare for the CSCA Exam
To prepare for the CSCA, confirm which subjects your program needs, learn the format (48 questions in 60 minutes for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry), take a free diagnostic test, study each syllabus topic with practice questions, then finish with full timed mock tests.
How to prepare for the CSCA in 6 steps
Follow these steps in order. Each one links to the page that covers it in detail.
- Step 1
Confirm which subjects you need
Mathematics is required for every applicant. Physics and Chemistry depend on your program, and Chinese-taught programs and Chinese Government Scholarship applicants also take Professional Chinese. Check each university's requirements before you plan.
- Step 2
Learn the exam format
Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry each have 48 single-choice questions in 60 minutes, so you get about 75 seconds per question. Professional Chinese has 80 questions in 90 minutes. Every paper is scored from 0 to 100.
- Step 3
Take a free diagnostic test
Start with a short timed practice set in each subject to see where you stand. Your mistakes show which topics need the most work, so you don't spend weeks revising what you already know.
- Step 4
Study topic by topic from the syllabus
Work through the official syllabus one topic at a time: learn the idea, then answer exam-style questions on it straight away. Keep a list of the question types you get wrong and revisit them every week.
- Step 5
Switch to full timed mock tests
In the final weeks, sit full-length mock tests under exam conditions: 60 minutes, no calculator, no breaks. Review every wrong answer and its explanation before you take the next one.
- Step 6
Register early and plan exam day
The CSCA runs six sessions a year and each has a short registration window, so register as soon as it opens. Test your device and room a week before a home-based exam.
How long should you prepare for the CSCA?
Most students plan 4 to 12 weeks. Pick the plan that matches how much time you have before your sitting, then adjust it after your diagnostic test. For a day-by-day version, see the 90-day CSCA study plan.
12 weeks
Best for: Starting from scratch, or taking three subjects
- Weeks 1–2: diagnostic test, then fill gaps in the topics you got wrong
- Weeks 3–8: one syllabus topic at a time, with practice questions after each
- Weeks 9–11: one full timed mock test per subject each week, with review
- Week 12: light revision of your mistake list and exam-day setup
8 weeks
Best for: Comfortable with the content, need exam practice
- Week 1: diagnostic test in each subject
- Weeks 2–5: weakest topics first, practising timed question sets
- Weeks 6–7: two full mock tests per subject each week
- Week 8: review explanations and rest before the exam
4 weeks
Best for: Registered for the next sitting
- Week 1: diagnostic test, then pick your three weakest topics per subject
- Weeks 2–3: those topics plus one full mock test every few days
- Week 4: final mock tests, mistake review and exam-day checklist
CSCA preparation by subject
Every paper is scored from 0 to 100, and each university sets the scores it accepts. Prepare for the subjects your program asks for.
How to prepare for CSCA Mathematics
Required for everyone. Covers sets and inequalities, functions and sequences, geometry and algebra, and probability and statistics. Practise working every calculation by hand.
How to prepare for CSCA Physics
Usually needed for engineering and science programs. Covers mechanics, thermal physics, electricity and magnetism, and optics and modern physics. Learn the standard formulas until you can apply them quickly.
How to prepare for CSCA Chemistry
Usually needed for medicine, pharmacy and laboratory sciences. Covers core concepts and calculations, properties and reactions, chemical theories and laws, and experiments. Practise balancing equations and mole calculations quickly.
How to prepare for CSCA Professional Chinese
For Chinese-taught programs and Chinese Government Scholarship applicants. 80 questions in 90 minutes, in Chinese, so reading speed matters as much as vocabulary.
CSCA preparation questions
How do I prepare for the CSCA exam?
Confirm which subjects you need, learn the format (48 questions in 60 minutes for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry), take a diagnostic test, study each syllabus topic with practice questions, then finish with full timed mock tests. Register as soon as your session's registration window opens.
How long does CSCA preparation take?
Most students plan 4 to 12 weeks. Allow about 12 weeks if you are starting from scratch or taking three subjects, and at least 4 weeks of focused practice if you already know the content.
Can I prepare for the CSCA for free?
Yes. CSCA.ai has free practice tests in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry without sign-up, plus free lesson units after you create an account. The official syllabus is published on csca.cn. Full Access unlocks the remaining lessons and full timed mocks; live classes are sold separately.
Are there CSCA past papers?
Check csca.cn for any official sample material for your session. CSCA.ai's 30 full-length mock tests follow the official format: 48 single-choice questions in 60 minutes, scored from 0 to 100, with an explanation for every answer.
Can I use a calculator in the CSCA?
The published exam rules do not list a calculator among the permitted items, so practise working every calculation by hand. Check the candidate notice on csca.cn for your session before test day.
Do I need live classes to pass the CSCA?
No, many students prepare on their own with practice questions and mock tests. Live classes help if you want a teacher to explain difficult topics, keep you on a schedule and answer questions as you go.
CSCA.ai is an independent preparation platform. Check the official CSCA exam introduction and the current notices on csca.cn for rules, dates and fees.
