How a lesson works

Every lesson follows the same four steps, so you always know what comes next.

  1. 1

    Learn in short steps

Each lesson is split into small steps, each with a clear explanation, a worked example and a takeaway.

  2. 2

    Take the mini-test

Finish the lesson with a few questions on what you just learned, in the same style as the CSCA exam.

  3. 3

    See why, not just what

Review every question with the correct answer and an explanation, so mistakes turn into understanding.

  4. 4

    Earn XP and move on

Completing a lesson earns XP and unlocks the next one, so you always know what to study next.

Functions: what goes in, what comes out

Step 1 of 2

What is a function?

A function is a rule that takes an input and gives exactly one output. We often call it f, and write f(x) for the output when the input is x.

Example

f(x) = 2x − 3
Input x = 4 → output f(4) = 2(4) − 3 = 5

Takeaway: To find f(a), replace every x in the rule with a, then simplify.
