Engineering in China is not one application or one CSCA subject combination. Petroleum, chemical, computer, environmental and other engineering majors can differ in teaching language, required science paper, application documents and fees. The practical starting point is to choose an exact degree program and read its current international undergraduate admissions notice. This guide uses published 2026 university examples to show how to compare programs, select CSCA papers and build an application plan for the 2026–27 intake.

Which engineering program should you compare?

Start with the course itself: first-year Mathematics and science, later specializations, laboratory or project work, teaching language, campus and degree duration. Check the university's own degree page, not only a directory listing. The China University of Petroleum (Beijing) undergraduate program list shows multiple engineering routes, including petroleum, chemical and resource exploration, with both English- and Chinese-taught options. The petroleum engineering program page gives that particular degree's core course examples and language options. Use those details to judge fit rather than treating the word 'engineering' as enough.

If professional recognition matters for your planned career, ask the university for the exact degree title, awarding institution, accreditation or recognition evidence, and curriculum details. Check any licensing or recognition rules in the country where you intend to work after graduation. Avoid assuming that a general university ranking answers this professional question.

What CSCA subjects do engineering applicants take?

The official CSCA introduction identifies Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as the academic papers. Each contains 48 single-choice questions in 60 minutes, is scored from 0 to 100, and can be offered in Chinese or English. The organizer's general guidance says the university determines whether Physics or Chemistry is needed for a particular major. Professional Chinese is a separate paper; the applicant's route and university rules determine whether it is required. Do not register for a science paper by guessing from another university's engineering major.

  • Petroleum Engineering at China University of Petroleum (Beijing), English-taught: its published 2026 list specifies Mathematics in English plus Physics or Chemistry in English.
  • Chemical Engineering and Technics at the same university, English-taught: its 2026 list specifies Mathematics in English plus Chemistry in English.
  • Computer Science and Technology at the same university, English-taught: its 2026 list specifies Mathematics in English plus Physics or Chemistry in English.
  • Resource Exploration Engineering at the same university, Chinese-taught: its list specifies Professional Chinese (STEM), Mathematics in Chinese, and Physics or Chemistry in Chinese.

These are examples from the university's 2026 CSCA subject table, not universal engineering rules. That table also states that its listed English-taught applicants are exempt from Professional Chinese. Another university or scholarship route may have different requirements. For preparation, use the Mathematics syllabus, Physics syllabus or Chemistry syllabus only after you know your actual subject combination.

English-taught or Chinese-taught engineering?

Teaching language changes both your classroom experience and application evidence. The Zhejiang University 2026 international undergraduate guide says Chinese-taught applicants need HSK proof unless a listed language-of-instruction exemption applies; English-taught applicants whose first language is not English need accepted English-language evidence. The CUPB 2026 application guide gives its own HSK and English thresholds. Check the current threshold for the exact program rather than copying a score from a different university.

CSCA Mathematics and science papers can be taken in Chinese or English, but the CUPB subject table explicitly asks its Chinese-taught applicants to choose Chinese and its English-taught applicants to choose English. Confirm this before booking: a good score in the wrong language version may not satisfy a program's stated rule. CSCA and HSK are separate tests; see our CSCA vs HSK comparison.

How much does an engineering bachelor cost?

Published fees are program-specific. CUPB's petroleum engineering page lists RMB 25,000 tuition per year and a four-year duration for that program. This is a useful worked budget example, not a price for all engineering degrees in China. Compare each university's current tuition with application fees, accommodation, insurance, meals, local transport, travel and any laboratory or materials charges the program actually lists. Check scholarship coverage and renewal conditions separately. Our student living-cost guide helps build the non-tuition side of the budget.

What is the application sequence?

A practical engineering applicant workflow

  1. Shortlist exact degrees

Compare major, university, campus, curriculum, teaching language and published total cost. Save each program's current official page.

  2. Confirm eligibility and tests

Read the university's current international undergraduate notice. Record CSCA papers, test language, language-certificate rules and the final date to submit scores.

  3. Book and prepare for CSCA

Use the official csca.cn schedule. Allocate the most study time to the Mathematics and science papers your target program actually requires, then practise timed questions.

  4. Gather documents

Prepare passport, school diploma or expected-graduation certificate, transcripts, accepted language proof, CSCA score report and any program-specific forms or translations.

  5. Submit and track each application

Use the university's official portal and note submission confirmations, scholarship steps and any follow-up request. Keep the original documents for enrollment.

For comparison, the Chongqing University 2026 undergraduate guide asks for a valid CSCA transcript and sets English-language evidence options for English-taught applicants whose native language is not English. The Zhejiang guide also requires a valid CSCA report for the 2026–27 year. The fact that both ask for CSCA does not make their deadlines, documents or acceptable subjects identical. Keep a separate checklist for every university.

Frequently asked engineering questions

Is Physics always required for engineering?

No universal Physics-only rule follows from the official CSCA description. The CUPB list permits Physics or Chemistry for some engineering majors but specifically requires Chemistry for its English-taught Chemical Engineering and Technics program. Follow your major's current university table.

Is Professional Chinese required for English-taught engineering?

Not for the English-taught programs covered by CUPB's published 2026 table; it explicitly exempts them. Do not apply that exemption to a different university or scholarship without checking its own rules. The CSCA organizer's general guidance and a university's specific subject list both deserve a careful read.
