CSCA Exam Tips 2026–27: Exam Day Strategy and Common Mistakes
CSCA exam tips: pace yourself at about 75 seconds per question, complete the official mock test, convert to Beijing time and avoid common exam-day mistakes.

The best CSCA exam tips are about time and preparation. Pace Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at about 75 seconds per question (48 in 60 minutes) and Professional Chinese at about 67 seconds (80 in 90 minutes). Complete the official system test and mock exam, convert Beijing time to your local time, and never leave a question blank.
- Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry: 48 single-choice questions in 60 minutes, about 75 seconds each
- Professional Chinese: 80 single-choice questions in 90 minutes, about 67 seconds each
- Exam times: published in Beijing time (UTC+8); check your admission ticket and convert
- Home-based test: Windows computer plus a phone or tablet as a second camera; macOS is not supported
- Desk: only your ID, admission ticket, computer, keyboard, mouse and scratch materials
- Scratch materials: a small whiteboard or blank paper inside a transparent folder, with an erasable marker
- Before the exam: the official guide requires a system test and at least one official mock exam
- Calculator: not on the list of permitted items
These tips assume you already know which subjects your programs need. If you are still unsure what the test involves, read our overview of the CSCA exam and who needs it first. Everything below is about turning the knowledge you have into the highest score you can get on the day.
What are the best CSCA exam tips for time management?
The CSCA is a speed test as much as a knowledge test. Average pace is not the same as a fixed time per question, though: some questions take 20 seconds, others two minutes. The skill is to collect every easy mark first, so a hard question never steals time from three easy ones. The two-pass method below is the simplest way to do that.
The two-pass method for CSCA time management
First pass: answer what you know
Go through every question in order. If you can solve it within about a minute, answer it. If not, pick your best guess, flag it and move on. Never leave a question empty during the first pass.
Use checkpoints
For a 48-question paper, aim to reach question 24 by minute 25 and finish the first pass by minute 50. For Professional Chinese, keep word-level questions fast so you have time left for reading passages.
Second pass: return to flagged questions
Use the remaining time on the questions you flagged, easiest first. You can change answers until time runs out, and your progress is saved automatically.
Last minute: check for blanks
The question navigation panel shows which questions you have answered, so scan it for anything unanswered and fill it in. A blank answer can never earn a mark.
About guessing: the official notices we reviewed do not describe any penalty for wrong answers. Unless your own exam instructions say otherwise, an educated guess is always better than a blank. Eliminate the options you know are wrong first, then choose between what is left. Our guide to CSCA exam format and scoring explains what is known about how answers are scored.
What should you do in the week before the CSCA exam?
CSCA exam week checklist
Confirm your timetable in your local time
Exam times are given in Beijing time (UTC+8). For example, 14:00 in Beijing is 11:00 in Karachi, 11:45 in Kathmandu, 12:00 in Dhaka, 13:00 in Jakarta and 07:00 in Lagos. Write your local start time for each subject on paper.
Download your admission ticket
Admission tickets are released for download shortly before the exam. Save a copy and keep the ticket number and password somewhere safe.
Complete the system test and official mock exam
The official home-based test guide makes a system test and at least one CSCA-organized mock exam mandatory. Use the same computer, phone, room and internet connection you will use on the day.
Prepare your room and desk
Use a fully enclosed private room where nobody will enter. Clear the desk of everything except your ID, admission ticket, computer, keyboard, mouse and scratch materials.
Switch from learning to light review
Do one short timed set per subject each day and review your error log. Avoid starting new topics in the last few days, and sleep at your normal time.
What happens on CSCA exam day?
Many candidates take the CSCA as a home-based online test, and computer-based or paper-based testing at authorized centers is available in some countries. The steps below follow the official home-based test guide. If you sit at a test center, follow the instructions on your admission ticket instead, and arrive early with the same ID you registered with. You choose your test mode when you book, as our CSCA registration guide explains.
Home-based CSCA exam day, step by step
Log in early
The exam system opens one hour before each subject. Log in as soon as it opens; all pre-exam steps must be finished five minutes before the start, and late entry is not allowed.
Verify your identity
Log in with your ticket number and password, complete facial recognition and show your original ID to the camera.
Connect your second camera
Scan the QR code with your phone or tablet and place it behind you to one side, at about 45 degrees, so it shows your upper body, hands and computer screen.
Scan the room and your scratch materials
Do a 360-degree room scan and show your whiteboard or transparent folder to the proctor. Read and accept the exam rules.
Take the exam
Answer with the mouse. Your progress saves automatically, and you can go back and change answers before time runs out.
Finish correctly
The paper submits automatically when time ends. Wait for the submission successful message, erase your scratch materials on camera when the proctor asks, and keep the exam client files on your computer until results are announced.
If you take several subjects, each one has its own time slot and a session can run over two days. Use the gap between subjects to eat, drink water and rest away from the screen, then log in again as soon as the next slot opens. If your internet drops during the exam, log back in: your saved progress is kept. For any other technical problem, contact the proctor straight away. The reported session dates are listed in our CSCA exam 2026–27 guide.
What are the most common CSCA mistakes?
- Registering for the wrong subjects, exam language or Chinese track for your target programs
- Missing the start time by forgetting that exam times are in Beijing time
- Skipping the official system test and mock exam, then finding a camera or network problem on the day
- Planning to use a Mac: the home-based test requires Windows
- Using ordinary paper, a pen or a notebook instead of a whiteboard or blank paper in a transparent folder
- Leaving other people in the room, sitting on a bed or sofa, or using a second monitor
- Spending three or four minutes on one hard question early in the paper
- Leaving questions blank instead of making an educated guess
- Practicing with a calculator, then losing time doing arithmetic by hand in the real exam
- Closing the exam client before seeing the submission successful message
How do you avoid careless mistakes in math, physics and chemistry?
Careless mistakes follow patterns, and you can train them out. In math, the usual culprits are sign errors, forgetting domain restrictions and dividing the wrong way in trigonometry. In physics, they are unit conversions and forgetting that velocity and momentum have direction. In chemistry, they are unbalanced equations and using 22.4 L/mol outside standard conditions.
- Underline negative words such as not, incorrect or except before you read the options
- Write units at every step in physics and chemistry calculations
- Check signs: the quadrant in trigonometry, the direction of vectors, positive or negative charge
- Before choosing, ask whether your answer is reasonable: a probability above 1 or a negative mass is a red flag
- Look at the options first in calculation questions; sometimes estimation is enough to rule out three of them
- Keep an error log during practice and re-read it the day before the exam
The best way to build these habits is regular timed practice under exam conditions: no calculator in reach, a whiteboard instead of paper, and a clock running. Our free CSCA practice questions let you do short timed sets by subject, so you can practice pacing in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry without signing up.
If you prefer a teacher to review your errors with you, our live CSCA classes run online with recordings you can rewatch, which helps if a topic did not click the first time.
Frequently asked questions

About 75 seconds per question in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (48 questions in 60 minutes), and about 67 seconds in Professional Chinese (80 questions in 90 minutes).
Is there negative marking in the CSCA?
The official notices we reviewed do not describe any penalty for wrong answers. Check your own exam instructions, and unless they say otherwise, answer every question.
Can I use paper for rough work in the home-based CSCA?
Only a small whiteboard or blank paper inside a transparent folder, with an erasable marker. You must show it to the proctor before the exam and erase it on camera at the end.
Can I take the CSCA on a Mac?
No. The home-based test client runs on Windows only, so you need a Windows computer plus a phone or tablet as the second camera.
What happens if my internet disconnects during the CSCA?
Log back in as quickly as you can. Your saved progress is kept. For other technical problems, contact the proctor immediately.
Can I submit the CSCA early?
Plan not to. Published guides for the home-based test say the paper submits automatically when time ends, so use any spare time to check flagged questions and do not close the client until you see the submission successful message.
